This National Standard establishes minimum general requirements for the refrigeration and air conditioning sector. It provides requirements for the following:

a) redesigning of refrigerant systems;
b) installation of cooling systems;
c) system operation and maintenance;
d) inspection and preventative maintenance;
e) record keeping and documentation;
f) recovery, recycling and reclaiming;
g) handling, transportation and storage of refrigerants;
h) disposal of refrigerants and refrigeration systems;
i) retrofitting and alternatives;
j) safety requirements;
k) training and certification;
l) regulatory framework; and
m) natural and flammable refrigerants.
