TRINIDAD AND TOBAGO TO HOST INTERNATIONAL ISO GOVERNANCE STANDARDS MEETING

Date: June 26th, 2026.

The Trinidad and Tobago Bureau of Standards (TTBS) is currently hosting international experts from around the world for the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) Technical Committee 309 (ISO/TC 309) Working Group 1 meeting on Governance of Organizations from June 22–26, 2026, in Port of Spain. The meeting has brought together governance specialists, standards experts and stakeholders to advance the development of international standards that support effective governance, accountability, transparency and ethical conduct in organizations.

Over the five-day meeting, delegates will work on several important international initiatives, including the expert review of ISO 37000, the progression of ISO 37006 on effective governance indicators, and the resolution of comments on ISO 37011, a developing standard that provides guidance for organizations seeking to operate with a clearly defined purpose. These projects are expected to shape the next generation of governance standards used by organizations worldwide.

In addition to the technical meetings, TTBS will host a public stakeholder session on June 26th, providing local organizations with direct access to international experts and emerging global thinking on governance. Representatives from the public and private sectors, academia, professional bodies and civil society organizations will have an opportunity to engage in discussions on governance standards and their relevance to Trinidad and Tobago’s development.

The work of ISO/TC 309 supports stronger governance practices across organizations of all sizes and sectors. Good governance helps build trust, improve organizational performance, strengthen resilience and support sustainable development outcomes.

The hosting of the meeting also supports the strategic objectives of the Ministry of Trade, Investment and Tourism (MTTI), particularly those related to institutional strengthening, improving the quality of national goods, services and institutions, and positioning Trinidad and Tobago as an attractive destination for business and investment. By bringing international governance experts to Trinidad and Tobago, the event provides a valuable opportunity to strengthen national capacity and showcase the country’s leadership in international standardization.

Speaking on the significance of the event, Permanent Secretary (Ag.), Ministry of Trade, Investment and Tourism, Ms. Abigail Bynoe noted that this meeting reflects the country’s commitment to quality, accountability and institutional excellence. She stated, “These standards align closely with the mandate and strategic priorities of the Ministry of Trade, Investment and Tourism. Our vision for a more diversified, innovative and export-oriented economy is underpinned by a commitment to quality. We recognize that competitiveness is not determined solely by the quality of products and services, but also by the quality of the institutions and governance frameworks that support them. Strong governance standards foster operational excellence, improve organizational performance and create an enabling environment for businesses to innovate, grow and compete internationally.

At the national level, this contributes to the broader objective of building a modern and dynamic economy. By strengthening governance across both the public and private sectors, we create an enabling environment that will not only encourage innovation, but will support entrepreneurship, facilitate trade and attract quality investment. In short, good governance is not only good management—it is good economic policy.”

Trinidad and Tobago currently holds two key leadership positions within ISO/TC 309 through Dr. Axel Kravatzky, who serves as Vice-Chair of ISO/TC 309 and Convenor of Working Group 1. TTBS has also played a leading role in the development of several governance-related standards, including ISO 37000 (Governance of Organizations), ISO 37005 (Governance of Organizations – Developing Indicators for Effective Governance), ISO 37006 (Effective Governance – Indicators) and ISO 37011 (Purpose-Driven Organizations).
