Celebrating World Metrology Day 2026

May 20th is World Metrology Day, commemorating the anniversary of the signing of the Metre Convention in Paris, in 1875. This treaty provides the basis for a worldwide unified measurement system that supports scientific discovery and innovation, manufacturing, trade, and consumer protection, as well as the improvement of the quality of life and the protection of the global environment.

The 2026 theme, “Metrology: Building Trust in Policy Making”, highlights the role metrology plays in providing scientific evidence and legal frameworks that policy makers can use to make informed, transparent and enforceable decisions.

Although metrology often operates quietly behind the scenes, its impact is felt every day. Accurate energy and fuel measurements, transport safety and environmental monitoring, fair market transactions, reliable medical equipment, all depend on strong metrology systems. These agreed frameworks and systems help ensure fairness in commerce both locally and globally, confidence in public services and protection for consumers.

The Trinidad and Tobago Bureau of Standards (TTBS), through its Metrology Division, plays a vital role in maintaining measurement accuracy across sectors. Through calibration services, verification activities, technical expertise and stakeholder engagement, TTBS supports a strong and modern National Quality Infrastructure that promotes fairness, accountability and international competitiveness. By fostering a national culture of quality, TTBS remains committed to advocacy, continuous improvement and advancing confidence in the systems that underpin trade, innovation and consumer protection.

This World Metrology Day, TTBS joins the international metrology community in recognising the essential role measurement plays in building trust in the policies, institutions and decisions that shape our society.

Happy World Metrology Day!
