Metrology Division Contributing to Regional Development:
Attachment of regional counterparts to the Metrology Division in the areas of Mass, Volume and Temperature
In the latter part of 2014, the Metrology Division facilitated an attachment of three regional counterparts in the areas of Mass, Volume and Temperature calibrations. This activity was held from November 17 to November 28, 2014 at the Bureau’s Head Office in Macoya, Tunapuna.
Mr. Roosevelt Sabin and Mr. Jomarie Leblanc from the Dominica Bureau of Standards, along with Mr. Dhiredj Prahladsingh from the Suriname Bureau of Standards participated in the training programme.
The training started off with Ms. Erica Caruth, the acting Head of the Metrology Division welcoming the participants and encouraging them to make full use of the opportunity and to learn as much as possible.
Theoretical and practical training conducted by staff of the Division included topics on:
- Basic Metrology;
- Measurement Uncertainty;
- Classification of Weights;
- Types of Weighing Machines;
- Tests for Weighing Machines;
- Introduction to ITS-90;
- Types of temperature devices and the principles of operation;
- Calibration of Liquid in Glass thermometers and other temperature devices;
- Introduction to Platinum resistance thermometry – Science and Application; and
- Volumetric Prover Calibration – Gravimetric Method
The participants also had the opportunity to understand aspects of legal metrology in Trinidad and Tobago and the verification procedures of measuring devices used in trade. Throughout the training period, the participants all showed genuine interest and application, which was reflected in the very interactive nature of the sessions.
During the closing ceremony participants were awarded training Certificates of Participation. They also completed training evaluation forms which provided valuable feedback. While it was felt that the training duration was too short to fully assimilate all that was passed on, the participants expressed that the training was very valuable and that they would be taking home very practical and useful guidance.
