As part of its ongoing efforts to strengthen Trinidad and Tobago’s national quality infrastructure, the Trinidad and Tobago Bureau of Standards (TTBS) hosted two critical stakeholder engagements on Wednesday, May 28^th. The sessions aimed at advancing electrical safety and promoting sustainability in garment manufacturing.

Strengthening Electrical Safety Practices

Organized by TTBS’ Laboratory Services Division, the virtual seminar, “Ensuring Electrical Safety: Focus on Rubber Insulated Gloves and Hot Sticks,” offered guidance on the application of ASTM standards for electrical protective equipment.

The seminar spotlighted safety practices essential to the high-risk work environments in the electrical, utility, HSE and energy sectors. Industry professionals, as well as academia, benefited from insights shared by local and international experts, and explored TTBS’ own testing capabilities through its Electrical Products Laboratory.

Advancing Sustainable Garment Manufacturing

On the same day, TTBS’ Standardization Division hosted a public stakeholder consultation on the draft voluntary standard TTS 667:20XX – Guidelines for Sustainable Garment Manufacturing, the first of its kind in the western hemisphere.

The virtual session brought together designers, garment manufacturers and textile stakeholders to provide feedback on a proposed national standard with a focus of integrating sustainability, ethical practices and circular economy principles into the local garment manufacturing industry.

Delivering the opening remarks for the session, Executive Director of the TTBS, Mr Jose Trejo noted, “This standard offers a roadmap for sustainability, from sourcing to recycling. It reduces ambiguity with clear, measurable criteria, builds brand credibility and empowers both businesses and consumers to make better choices. In a rapidly evolving global market, this standard will ensure that our fashion and textile industry flourish with resilience and innovation.”

Stakeholders in the garment manufacturing are encouraged to review and submit comments on the draft standard by July 19^th 2025, via a downloadable form which can be accessed on TTBS’ website: www.gottbs.com.

These dual events form part of TTBS’ broader commitment to supporting safety, sustainability and economic transformation across key sectors.
