The Trinidad and Tobago Bureau of Standards (TTBS) recently collaborated with a key international partner, ASTM International, to host the Trinidad leg of ASTM International’s Caribbean Road Show.
The Road Show, which was held on Wednesday 6th June, 2018, focused on raising awareness of standardization and how ASTM standards improve and maintain quality, safety and sustainability in construction products. Key topics covered included:
- Standards to support Sustainable Construction
- Overview of U.S. based International Codes including adoption and enforcement
- Overview of Trinidad and Tobago standards for the construction industry
The conference provided the ideal platform for local stakeholders to interact and share their experiences with experts from ASTM International and the International Code Council (ICC).
In his feature address, Mr Norris Herbert, Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Trade and Industry, indicated “…the increasing demand for more resilient and sustainable buildings in a region faced with catastrophic natural disasters including devastating hurricanes is indicative of the timeliness of this intervention.”
TTBS has supported the development and growth of the local construction industry through the adoption of several ASTM and ICC standards. These standards, when implemented, improve the quality and overall safety of building materials and by extension the country’s built infrastructure. A listing of national standards pertaining to the construction sector can be found on the TTBS website (www.ttbs.org.tt).
Sustainable Development means not only designing for the needs of today, but also for the needs of tomorrow. Similarly, we at TTBS remain committed to supporting the current and evolving needs of our local stakeholders.
